Terms of Service

Folio  ·  last updated April 2026

Folio is a personal book-formatting and reader tool built by Jacob Siler. These terms govern your use of the site at folio.jacobsiler.com and any companion services operated under that domain. Using Folio means you agree to the below.

What Folio is and isn't

Folio is a free-to-use writing and formatting tool provided as-is, without any warranty. It's built by one person, runs on best-effort infrastructure, and can change, break, or go away without notice. Treat it accordingly: keep your own local backups of important manuscripts, and don't rely on Folio as the sole copy of work you can't afford to lose.

Your content

You own everything you write. Folio claims no rights to your manuscripts, cover art, audio, annotations, or anything else you create inside it. Folio stores your content in Google Firebase to sync it across your devices. See the Privacy Policy for exactly what's stored and where.

Acceptable use

Using Folio, you agree not to:

If any of the above happens, I reserve the right to revoke access, remove content, and/or cooperate with lawful requests from authorities.

Third-party services

Folio relies on Google Firebase, Google Cloud Text-to-Speech (opt-in), ElevenLabs (opt-in), Gumroad (for paid releases), and Cloudflare Workers. Using the corresponding Folio features means you also accept those providers' terms:

Paid releases

If you publish a paid release on Folio, payments are processed entirely by Gumroad. Folio takes no cut and never handles card data. Refunds, chargebacks, and tax obligations are governed by Gumroad's own terms and your own agreement with buyers. Licence-key verification happens via a stateless Cloudflare Worker that does not log or persist buyer identity.

Availability and changes

Folio may be updated, paused, or discontinued at any time. If discontinuation ever happens, I'll give at least 30 days' notice to active users via the email on their Google account and provide a one-click export of their manuscripts as standard formats (MD, DOCX, EPUB).

Limitation of liability

Folio is provided “as is” with no warranties. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Jacob Siler is not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising out of your use of Folio, including lost profits, lost data, or lost manuscripts. This clause exists because Folio is a labour of love, not a commercial platform with an SLA — please act accordingly and keep backups of anything you care about.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of Ireland. Any dispute will be resolved in Irish courts unless both parties agree otherwise.
